Dansbare Música Tropical van Colombiaanse accordeonlegende met groot orkest. Cumbia!

De Colombiaanse havenstad Barranquilla wordt al meer dan een eeuw overspoeld met Caribische dansmuziek. De verpersoonlijking van dit weelderige muziekparadijs is de inmiddels 75-jarige accordeonist Anibal Velasquez Hurtado, met recht een legende in Colombia’s glorieuze muziekverleden. Met zijn razendsnelle variant op Cubaanse mambo en guaracha vernieuwde Velasquez de Afro-Colombiaanse dansmuziek. Ook populariseerde hij de ooit als minderwaardig beschouwde accordeon, nu het centrale instrument in stijlen als cumbia en vallenato.

Velasquez bracht sinds de jaren vijftig meer dan 300 elpees uit, een oeuvre dat de basis vormt voor de onlangs verschenen briljante verzamel-cd Anibal Velasquez y su Conjunto - Mambo Loco, uitgegeven door de vinylverzamelaars van Analog Africa. Velasquez toerde nooit eerder door Europa, een groot gemis dat nu eindelijk wordt rechtgezet.
