De Amerikaanse drummer Mark Guiliana (1980, New Jersey) is muzikant, componist, docent en producer. Hij toerde met o.a. Meshell Ndegeocello, Gretchen Parlato, Avishai Cohen, Lionel Loueke, Now Vs. Now, Dhafer Youssef en zijn eigen groepen Heernt en Beat Music. Vorig jaar was Guiliana’s progressieve en conceptuele benadering van de drums opeens te horen op Mehliana: Taming the Dragon, een baanbrekende samenwerking met toetsenist Brad Mehldau. En op David Bowie’s nieuwste single.
Daarnaast richtte Mark het label Beat Music Productions op. Hierop bracht hij in 2014 My Life Starts Now en Beat Music: The Los Angeles Improvisations uit. Dit jaar kwam het debuut van zijn jazzkwartet uit,Family First, met o.a. saxofonist Jason Rigby en pianist Shai Maestro.
Mark Guiliana weet de grens tussen akoestische en elektronische jazz moeiteloos te vervagen. Zijn jams nemen je mee langs jazz, soul, rock, dub en hiphop via bubbly baslijnen en chille grooves naar drum ‘n’ bass en andere elektronica. Guiliana wordt door de New York Times geroemd als “een drummer om wie zich een cultus van bewondering heeft gevormd.” Ook internationaal krijgt hij steeds meer erkenning voor zijn creatieve en innovatieve drumstijl.
