Zelden was een albumtitel passender dan bij het Blue Note-debuut van Takuya Kuroda. Rising Son (2014) staat namelijk voor een protegé die uit de schaduw van zijn meester stapt. In het geval van de in Kobe, Japan, geboren trompettist gaat het om José James, met wie de in Brooklyn woonachtige muzikant/componist al jarenlang samenwerkt.
Kuroda volgt een muzikale opleiding in zijn vaderland als hij wordt aangenomen op het vermaarde Berklee College of Music. De nu 37-jarige muzikant komt pas echt tot muzikaal wasdom in New York, waar hij zijn stijl, die zweeft tussen post-bop en souljazz met een flinke dosis hiphop en afrobeat, ontwikkelt. Eind 2016 kwam de opvolger van Rising Son uit, het mooie album Zigzagger, op jazzlabel Concord.
