Het grote en illustere Noorse gezelschap Jaga Jazzist komt dit najaar terug naar LantarenVenster, na het succesvolle One Armed Bandit-concert in maart 2011.
In 2002 won de band, in 1994 opgericht door Lars Horntveth, de BBC Best Jazz Album of the Year Award. Kort daarna werd de cd The Stix (Ninja Tune) door diverse media tot album van het jaar verkozen. Dit resulteerde in een jarenlange reeks uitverkochte shows in clubs door Europa, gevolgd door lovende kritieken op de diverse jazz- en rockfestivals waaronder North Sea Jazz.
Vorig jaar gaf de band samen met Sinfonia Rotterdam een bijzonder concert op festival Motel Mozaique, naar aanleiding van het album Live with Britten Sinfonia. Jaga’s muzikanten zijn betrokken bij veel projecten en diverse muziekstijlen en dat maakt de band zo uniek. Zonder beperkingen en met een arsenaal aan instrumenten creëert de band tijdloze muziek; melodisch, hypnotiserend, delicaat en subtiel.
Er zijn veel vergelijkingen gemaakt over Jaga Jazzist en hun muziek; van Soft Machine, Eric Satie, Fela Kuti, John Coltrane en Charles Mingus tot acts als Aphex Twin, Stereolab, Squarepusher, Isotope 217 en Tortoise. Jaga Jazzists geluid loopt als een rode draad door al deze invloeden.
