Je kunt Terence Blanchard met recht een man van vele kwaliteiten noemen. De 56-jarige Amerikaanse trompettist is bandleider, arrangeur, componist, componeerde een opera en heeft voor meer dan vijftig films de soundtrack verzorgd. Zo voltooide hij in 2018 de soundtrack voor Spike Lees nieuwste film BlacKkKlansman. De in New Orleans geboren en in New York woonachtige vijfvoudig Grammy-winnaar leerde het vak naast zijn jeugdvriend Wyton Marsalis. Terence is altijd vernieuwend en progressief. Zo komt hij ditmaal naar LantarenVenster met zijn project E-Collective, met daarin onder anderen de jonge veelbelovende musici Fabian Almazan en Charles Altura. Met dit kwintet wil Blanchard muzikale grond verkennen die hem al jaren fascineert. Het eerste resultaat van deze creatieve kruisbestuiving was het sterke debuutalbum Breathless (2015).
Blanchard heeft de gave om verhalen te vertellen en diepe emoties los te maken. Zo werd het in 2018 uitgebrachte album LIVE opgenomen in steden waar slachtoffers vielen in uit de hand gelopen conflicten tussen politieagenten en Afro-Amerikaanse burgers. Terence: “I wanted the music to be a healing force in the areas in which we performed — to let the music take your anger and frustrations. I’m not telling people not to be angry but when things become too much, the music is there to help you heal.”
