Oles Honchar. The world is like a weapon is een biografie van de Oekraïense schrijver en politicus Oles Honchar, die aan de basis stond van de Oekraïense onafhankelijkheid. Honchars verhaal wordt in deze film verteld door vijf studenten van de Oles Honchar Universiteit in Dnipropetrovsk. Ze reizen langs plekken waar Honchar zijn belangrijkste werken schreef: Dnipropetrovsk, Charkov, Poltava, Novomoskovsk en Kiev.
De studenten delen hun visies op Honchars werk en schrijven essays om zo de complexe levensloop van deze Oekraïense schrijver en politicus te begrijpen. Artistieke reconstructies tonen de drijfveren en dilemma’s van Honchar tijdens verschillende fases in zijn leven. Een belangrijk instrument daarvoor is een one-man show, een theatervoorstelling die gebaseerd is op zijn dagboeken en brieven. Deze one-man show is een rode draad in Oles Honchar. Oles Honchar (1918 -1955) werkte als leraar en schrijver voordat hij opgeroepen werd om te dienen in het Sovjet-leger tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Tijdens de oorlog bleef hij vanaf de frontlinies essays en gedichten publiceren. Na de oorlog keerde hij terug naar de Universiteit van Dnipropetrovsk en schreef hij vele romans en literaire werken. Ook zat hij kort in het Oekraïense parlement. Filmregisseur Kateryna Strelchenko over Honchar: ‘Honchar was een groot schrijver die het Oekraiense volk beschermde en als politicus de strijd aanging met de communistische regering. Hij richtte zich op de ontwikkeling van Oekraïne als natiestaat en werd zo een actieve deelnemer in het proces van Oekraïense onafhankelijkheid.

Honchar’s story is told by five students of the Oles Honchar University of Dnipro, who travel the country to landmarks where Honchar famously wrote important works; landmarks like Dnipro, Kharkiv, Poltava, Novomoskovsk and Kyiv. The students share ideas, write essays and try to understand the complex life path of Gonchar.

Oles Honchar (1918 – 1955) started out as a teacher and writer. He fought in the Red Army during World War II and kept publishing essays and poems from the frontlines. After the war, Honchar returned to the Dnipropetrovsk University and wrote a great deal of books and literary works. He also briefly served as a member of the Ukrainian parliament. Director of the film Kateryna Strelchenko: ‘Honchar was a leading writer who defended the Ukrainian people, as a politician, challenged the communist government, sought the development of all things Ukrainian, and eventually became an active participant in restoring Ukraine’s independence.’
