Sanatorium
Vlakbij Odessa ligt het Kuyalnik Sanatorium, een gedateerd kuuroord waar het voelt alsof de vroege jaren tachtig nooit zijn opgehouden. Toch sluipt de oorlog langzaam het gebouw binnen: vermoeide soldaten met lichamelijke en mentale verwondingen checken in als patient; af en toe klinkt het luchtalarm en rennen de bewoners naar de schuilkelder.
We maken kennis met een kleurrijke groep excentrieke personages, waaronder de forse beheerder Dmitriy met zijn kenmerkend bulderende lach. Ierse regisseur Gar O’Rourke schetst met beeldschone cinematografie en een nostalgisch kleurenpalet van mintgroen en zalmroze een droogkomisch portret van mensen die ondanks alles stoïcijns doorzetten. De heerlijk ongemakkelijke disco avond waar oude mensen over de dansvloer schuifelen en Careless Whisper door de speakers klinkt is onvergetelijk.
Near Odessa lies the Kuyalnik Sanatorium, a dated health resort where it feels as though the early eighties never ended. Yet the war slowly creeps into the building: weary soldiers with physical and mental injuries check in as patients; occasionally the air raid siren sounds and the residents run to the shelter.
We meet a colourful group of eccentric characters, including the burly manager Dmitriy with his trademark booming laugh. Irish director Gar O’Rourke paints, with stunning cinematography and a nostalgic colour palette of mint green and salmon pink, a dryly comic portrait of people who persevere stoically despite everything. The wonderfully awkward disco evening where elderly people shuffle across the dance floor and Careless Whisper plays through the speakers is unforgettable.
