Bashar, eenvisser, keert telkens weer terug naar het gebombardeerde huis van zijn familie waar een marmeren gebeeldhouwde latei met de twee leeuwen uit de filmtitel het laatste overgebleven aandenken is uit zijn verleden. Fakhri, een flamboyante antiekverzamelaar,droomt ervan om de leeuwen aan de ingang te plaatsen van zijn zelf-opgerichte museum. EnFadel, een musicus, brengt liederen terug die gedurende de bezetting van IS onder censuurvielen. Regisseur Zaradasht Ahmed registreert op een waardige, tedere manier een stad dielangzaam haar trauma te boven komt.
One of the world’s oldest cities, Mosul was left in ruins after years of ISIS occupation and thedevastating battle for liberation. In this unexpectedly hopeful film, we follow three men whotry to rebuild not just the city, but also its soul.
Bashar, a fisherman, returns again and againto his bombed-out family home by the Tigris, where a carved marble lintel, featuring the twolions in the film’s title, is the last relic still standing from his past. Fakhri, a flamboyant antiques collector, dreams of placing the lions at the entrance of his self-made museum, while Fadel, a musician, revives songs that were banned during the ISIS rule. Director Zaradasht Ahmed captures with dignity and tenderness a city slowly re-emerging from its trauma.
