Thuis zijn in Rotterdam – hoe ziet dat er eigenlijk uit? In deze vier films krijg je een persoonlijke kijk op hoe een buurt verandert, een poëtische interventie in het Museumpark, de zoektocht naar sporen van voormalige bewoners, en het verhaal van een socialistisch architect uit Rotterdam.
Now I Live Here – Premiere
Jonge filmmaker Hannah Kersten heeft eindelijk een (tijdelijke) woonruimte gevonden. Ze is trots om in Crooswijk te mogen wonen, het ‘echte’ Rotterdam. Ze merkt alleen dat de wijk snel aan het veranderen is. Is zij deel van het probleem? Met Nu Woon Ik Hier biedt Kersten een persoonlijke blik op gentrificatie, uitzetting en ontheemding. Een installatie van het werk is ook te zien in de tentoonstelling Realitiesn in het Nieuwe Instituut.
How Now, House?
Is jouw huis wel echt van jou? In de experimentele animatie How Now, House? onderzoekt regisseur Martin wie de vroegere bewoners waren van een huis in Rotterdam. Door de verhalen en geschiedenissen van deze mensen op een rij te zetten, keert zij het perspectief: een huis is niet van jou — jouw leven wordt juist onderdeel van de vele levens die het huis in de loop der tijd heeft verzameld.
Living into Happiness – Premiere
Van Tijen was een socialistisch architect die een onmiskenbare rol speelde bij de wederopbouw van Rotterdam. Met een ingenieursmatige benadering zocht hij naar constructieve oplossingen voor de woonopgave van die tijd. Maar als architect met socialistische idealen had hij één groot probleem: hij kon niet tekenen. Voor het verbeelden van zijn ideeën ging hij daarom samenwerkingen aan met andere wederopbouwarchitecten, onder wie Maaskant – wat onder meer leidde tot het iconische Groothandelsgebouw.
Pergola
De film volgt stadsdichter van Rotterdam Manu, die op een dag tegen Pergola aanloopt. Dit tijdelijke houten paviljoen, ontworpen door Studio Inscape, is een curieuze kruising tussen een tuinhuisje en een plek om de menselijke en niet-menselijke ecologie van het Museumpark te verkennen. Pergola nodigt bezoekers uit om de aarde onder zich, de planten,de vleermuizen en de mensen die er doorheen gaan in zich op te nemen. Manu denkt na over zijn eigen relatie tot de stad, en verweeft zijn persoonlijke herinneringen met observaties over zijn omgeving.
A Sequence of Heteronomies
Hoe gaan zij die werkzaam zijn in vormgeving en bouw om met de toenemende druk voor snelheid, efficiency, schaal en winst? Afgezet tegen de ambitieuze huisvestingsvisies van Rotterdam uit 2016 en 2024 onderzoekt A Sequence of Heteronomies de verhouding tussen architectuurontwerp en de realiteit van het bouwen. De film is opgenomen op acht grootschalige bouwplaatsen voor woningen op verschillende locaties in de stad, en gebruikt statisch observerende beelden die de choreografie van het bouwen weergeven. Uit interviews met architecten, bouwopzichters, vakbondsleiders en bouwvakkers komt een gestructureerd beeld naar voren van de complexe uitdagingen rondom de hedendaagse bouwindustrie.

She does notice, however, that the neighborhood is changing quickly. Is she part of the problem? With Nu Woon Ik Hier (Now I Live Here), Kersten offers a personal perspective on gentrification, eviction, and displacement. An installation of the work can also be seen in the exhibition Realities at the Nieuwe Instituut.
How Now, House?
Is your home really yours? In the experimental animation How Now, House?, director Martine xplores who the former residents were of a house in Rotterdam. By listing the stories and histories of these people, she reverses the perspective: a house does not belong to you –your life becomes part of the many lives the house has collected over time.
Living into Happiness – Premiere
Van Tijen was a socialist architect who played an undeniable role in the post-warreconstruction of Rotterdam. With an engineering approach, he searched for constructive solutions to the housing challenges of the time. But as an architect with socialist ideals, he had one major problem: he could not draw. To visualize his ideas, he collaborated with other reconstruction architects, including Maaskant – which led, among other things, to the iconic Groothandelsgebouw.
Pergola
The film follows Rotterdam city poet Manu, who stumbles upon Pergola, a temporary wooden pavilion designed by Studio Inscape. Pergola is a curious mix bewteen a garden shedand a place to encounter the human and non-human ecologies of the Museumpark. The pavilion invites visitors to notice the soil beneath, the plants, the bats and the people who pass through. Manu reflects on his own relationship with the city, weaving his personal memories with observations about his surroundings.
A Sequence of Heteronomies
How do those involved in design and construction navigate the ever increasing pressures for speed, efficiency, scale, and profit? Set against the backdrop of Rotterdam’s ambitioushousing visions of 2016 and 2024, A Sequence of Heteronomies examines the relationship between architectural design and the realities of construction. Shot inside eight active large-scale housing construction sites across the city, the film uses static, observational footage to capture the choreography of construction. Through interviews with architects, site managers, union representatives and construction workers, the film offers a layered reflection on the complexities of today’s building industry.
