Les Glaneurs et la Glaneuse (2000) is one of Agnès Varda’s most renowned documentaries. At the time, the film caused quite a stir and may well have become Varda’s calling card.

In Les Glaneurs et la Glaneuse, Agnès Varda encounters “gleaners” throughout France—people who find, collect, and reuse what others have left behind. These individuals do so out of necessity, chance, or conscious choice: living off what others discard to prevent waste. In the documentary, Varda brings together different worlds—the world of traditional gleaners from earlier times, and her own, in which she “finds,” collects, and repurposes images and stories.

The documentary was selected for the Cannes Film Festival in 2000 and is one of four films being screened again in theaters as part of the Varda’s Gaze (De blik van Varda) program.
