Red Path - Expat Cinema Rotterdam

Lotfi Achour

Miss seeing international films because you can’t yet keep up with the Dutch subtitles? Want to meet fellow expats and new Dutch folks? Love cinema? Then this is the event for you! Join Expat Cinema Rotterdam for the best international art house cinema with English subtitles.

Through a poetic and contemplative visual style, Red Path takes the viewer on a journey through the tormented mind of Achraf, where reality and nightmare seamlessly intertwine. More than a tale of terror, this film is a tribute to resilience, survival, and the unyielding human spirit that refuses to break—even in the darkest of times.

Inspired by a true tragedy in Tunisia’s Mghila Mountains, Red Path draws from the events of November 2015, when a young shepherd fell victim to jihadist violence—a shocking incident that exposed the fragility of security in the region. The film brings this story to life through the eyes of 13-year-old Achraf, who, after a brutal attack, is forced to carry an unimaginable message back to his village.

Newcomer Ali Helali delivers a remarkably natural performance as Achraf, while the breathtaking cinematography by Wojciech Staroń amplifies the film’s emotional intensity. The vast, rugged landscapes of Tunisia serve as a powerful visual metaphor for isolation and the will to survive.
