In samenwerking met de Gemeente Rotterdam, Platform Woonopgave en Vereniging Deltametropool verkent dit programma wooncoöperaties en nieuwe manieren om de bestaande woningvoorraad van Rotterdam beter te benutten. Aan de hand van films, een boekpresentatie en een gesprek worden alternatieven onderzocht voor de manier waarop we wonen en bouwen.

In collaboration with Gemeente Rotterdam, Platform Woonopgave and Vereniging Deltametropool, the programme brings together films, a book presentation and a conversation on cooperative housing and smarter ways of making use of Rotterdam’s existing housing stock.

Transforming Suburbia
In Vlaanderen is het vrijstaande suburbane huis met een tuin al tijdenlang een symbool van sociale orde en woningbezit. Maar grondschaarste, woningtekorten en klimaatverandering dwingen de plaatselijke planologen om dit bekende buurtmodel te herzien. Transforming Suburbia onderzoekt hoe bestaande buurten in voorsteden verdicht kunnen worden zonder de eigenschappen op te offeren die hun bewoners er juist zo aan waarderen. Door een reeks casestudy’s en gesprekken met architecten, beleidsvormers en huiseigenaren presenteert de film nieuwe manieren van wonen binnen het bestaande stedelijk weefsel, door wat er al is beter te gebruiken. Praktisch en optimistisch van toon biedt Transforming Suburbia een inspirerend kijkje in het aanpassingsproces van een alom aanwezig huisvestingsmodel aan een duurzamere en inclusievere toekomst.

Across Flanders, the freestanding, suburban house with its garden had long been a symbol of social order and home ownership. But land scarcity, housing shortages and climate change are forcing the local planning authorities to rethink this familiar neighbourhood model. Transforming Suburbia explores how existing suburban neighbourhoods can densify without sacrificing the qualities that their residents value the most. Through a series of case studies and conversations with architects, policy makers and home owners, the film presents new ways of living within the existing urban fabric by making better use of what is already there. Practical and optimistic, Transforming Suburbia offers an inspiring look into adapting a ubiquitous housing model to fit a more sustainable and inclusive future.

Such a Thing like Happiness

Herman Hertzberger ontwierp LiMa Wohnhof voor de Internationale Bouwtentoonstelling Berlijn in 1987 als een experiment in sociale woningbouw dat structuralistische principes combineert met participatief ontwerp en collectieve zelfbouw. In plaats van een af gebouw bood het project een kader dat bewoners konden aanpassen, zelf afmaken en zich eigen maken. Veertig jaar later zijn ideeën en idealen over gemeenschap en het dagelijks leven veranderd, maar hoewel sommige gemeenschappelijke faciliteiten in de loop van de tijd rustiger zijn geworden, bleef de liefde van de bewoners voor de architectuur onverminderd overeind. De film stelt de vraag hoe architectuur zich zo kan ontwikkelen en aanpassen aan de sociale en materiële verwachtingen van toekomstige generaties dat elke nieuwe generatie opnieuw kan invullen wat samenleven betekent.

Herman Hertzberger designed LiMa Wohnhof as part of the International Building Exhibition Berlin in 1987, an experiment in social housing that combined structuralist principles, participatory design and collective self-building. Instead of a finished building, the project provided a framework that residents could adapt, complete and appropriate. Four decades later, ideas and ideals about community and everyday life have changed, and while some of the communal facilities have become quieter over time, the love of the residents for the architecture has not diminished one bit. The film revolves around the question of how architecture can evolve and adapt to the social and material expectations of future generations, allowing each generation to redefine what it means to live together.
