Nu de stijging van de zeespiegel kuststeden over de hele wereld bedreigt, onderzoeken architecten, wetenschappers en ingenieurs hoe menselijke nederzettingen zich kunnen aanpassen aan een leven op het water door middel van drijvende buurten, nieuwe soorten infrastructuren en nieuwe manieren om voedsel en energie te produceren. Deze documentaire bekijkt de ideeën achter de zogenaamde ‘blauwe revolutie’, en volgt de mensen die mogelijke toekomstige woongebieden voorbereiden die tot voor kort alleen in sciencefiction bestonden. Aan de hand van verschillende projecten en wetenschappers in Nederland en elders in de wereld laat de film de ambities en complexiteiten zien van het ontwerpen voor een onzekere toekomst – waarin drijvende architectuur ofwel een bestendig alternatief kan zijn, ofwel de zoveelste technologische noodoplossing die de diepere oorzaken van de klimaatcrisis alleen versterkt in plaats van bestrijdt.
As rising sea levels threaten coastal cities around the world, architects, scientists and engineers explore how human settlements could adapt to life on water, through floating neighbourhoods, innovative infrastructures and new approaches to food and energy production. This documentary investigates the ideas behind the so-called ‘blue revolution’ and follows the people working to transform what once seemed like science fiction into possible future habitats. Featuring several projects and scientists from the Netherlands, as well as projects developed across the globe, the film shows both the ambitions and the complexities of designing for an uncertain future, where floating architecture can either turn out to be a resilient alternative, or another technological fix that reinforces the deeper causes of the climate crisis it promises to tackle.
