The Pack Project is het jaarlijks terugkerend jongtalentenproject van Festival Jazz International Rotterdam. Dit jaar presenteert de Rotterdamse saxofonist Wietse Voermans zijn ‘Pack’, een exclusieve band die door hem samen met de artistieke leiding van Jazz International is samengesteld. Wietse Voermans is uitgekozen om zijn karaktervolle saxofoonsound en zijn hoogstaande solistische vaardigheden en zeggingskracht.
Voor The Pack Project laat Voermans zich vooral inspireren door musici die hij bewondert om hun spel en persoonlijkheid, niet in eerste instantie om het instrument dat zij bespelen. Hij nodigde vier instrumentalisten uit plaats te nemen in zijn band: rietblazer Michael Moore, de Deense tubaspeler Rasmus Svale Kjærgård Lund, contrabassist Alessio Bruno uit Italië en de Nederlandse drummer Onno Govaert. “Vier musici die geïnteresseerd zijn in free-impro maar ook veel ervaring hebben met gecomponeerde muziek” zegt Voermans. “Ik vind het interessant muzikanten met verschillende achtergronden bij elkaar te brengen. Het is hun persoonlijkheid en lyriek die ik aantrekkelijk vind. Soms geef ik ze een stem die ze niet gewend zijn. Daarin zit de spanning.” Met Michael Moore en Onno Govaert in de band maakt Voermans ook een connectie met de Amsterdamse vrije-improscene.

Wietse Voermans has been selected on account of his distinctive saxophone sound, and his tremendous skill and eloquence as a soloist.
For The Pack Project, Voermans drew inspiration from musicians whom he admires for their style of play and their personality, and not primarily for the instrument they play. He has invited four instrumentalists to join his band: reed player Michael Moore, Danish tuba player Rasmus Svale Kjærgård Lund, contrabassist Alessio Bruno from Italy, and Dutch drummer Onno Govaert. “Four musicians who are interested in free-impro but who also have extensive experience with composed music,” says Voermans. “I think it’s interesting to bring together musicians from various backgrounds. Their personality and lyricism are what appeal to me. Sometimes I give them a voice they are unaccustomed to. That generates tension.” With Michael Moore and Onno Govaert on board, Voermans is also hooking up with the free-impro scene in Amsterdam.
