Masterclass: Deconstructing Scenario
IFFR Young Network and LantarenVenster invite you to Deconstructing Scenario, part of Rotterdams Open Doek Filmfestival 2019! Come by to watch and interactively analyse a short film in a masterclass with Iranian-Kurdish filmmaker Beri Shalmashi. You’ll get a hard copy of a screenplay, allowing you a closer look at process of the scriptwriter, and the opportunity to discuss it with the filmmaker herself!
With films such as Shouted from the Rooftops and Heart on Fire, Shalmashi’s acclaimed works touch upon themes of a sense of belonging and identity. She is currently working on adapting the bestselling novel The House and the Mosque by Kader Abdolah which entails the epic story of the Iranian Revolution. Her short films are internationally recognized and have won various awards, including the ECHO Award.

Beri Shalmashi
Beri Shalmashi graduated at the Netherlands Film Academy and received her MA at the Utrecht School of Arts. She wrote and directed several awarded movies and spend a few years in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq tutoring screenwriting and film theory at the Salahaddin University’s Faculty of Arts in Erbil. Beri is currently based in Amsterdam, writing for De Volkskrant and de Filmkrant, an advisor to the Dutch Film Fund, and wrapping up Big Village, an interactive film. She is hoping her adaptation of the popular and pretty epic Dutch novel The House of the Mosque, co-written with Willem Capteyn, will go into production one day.
