Vier verhalen over mensen aan de rand van de samenleving en hoe zij in en om Las Vegas zo goed en zo kwaad mogelijk een ’thuis’ creëren.
De film focust op de persoonlijke verhalen met als illustratie / achtergrond de plek waar dat verhaal zich afspeelt. En die locaties zijn bijzonder: in de stormwater tunnels, in een verlaten militaire bunker of in een simulatiegebied voor Mars-reizen.
Het geeft zowel een mooi inkijkje in de Amerikaanse samenleving als in de weerbaarheid van mensen die daar in zekere zin het slachtoffer van zijn. Je ziet bijna niets van het gangbare Las Vegas ‘above’, het zijn juist de delen van de stad ‘below’ die fascineren. Onze IFFR-favoriet van dit jaar.

The film focuses on the personal stories, set against the backdrop of the locations. And those locations are remarkable: stormwater tunnels, an abandoned military bunker, a simulation area for trips to Mars.
The film offers wonderful insight into American society and into the resilience of those who to some extent are victims of it. You see almost nothing of the usual Las Vegas ‘above’. Rather, it is those parts of the city ‘below’ that fascinate so much.
