Asphalte Public
In het centrum van het tweetalige Biel/Bienne in Zwitserland ligt een grote asfaltvlakte: Place de l’Esplanade. Aan de ene kant ligt het modernistische Palais des Congrès en aan de andere kant de Coupole. Waar het goed onderhouden congresgebouw de bureaucratische, officiële kant van de stad representeert is de Coupole een radicale muziek- en performancevenue in een voormalige gasfabriek dat nu op instorten staat. Met een breed scala aan stemmen, van straatmuzikanten en skaters tot gemeentelijke experts en politici, schetst regisseur Jan Buchholz in Asphalte Public een veelzijdig beeld van deze stedelijke asfaltvlakte. Iedereen heeft er zijn eigen ideeën bij. Wanneer de klimaatcrisis ook nog zijn kop opsteekt omdat het plein fungeert als urban heat sink raken de gemoederen nog veel meer verhit.
At the centre of the bilingual Swiss city of Biel/Bienne lies a vast asphalt square: Place de l’Esplanade. On one side stands the modernist Palais des Congrès, while on the other is the Coupole. The well-maintained congress centre represents the city’s official, bureaucratic face, whereas the Coupole is a radical music and performance venue housed in a former gasworks that is now close to collapse. Drawing on a wide range of voices, from street musicians and skateboarders to municipal experts and politicians, director Jan Buchholz’s Asphalte Public paints a richly layered portrait of this remarkable urban space. Everyone has their own vision for its future. As the climate crisis enters the debate and the square’s role as an urban heat island becomes impossible to ignore, tensions rise even further.
