Banality of Evil
Het kwaad ontstaat vaak uit de kleinste handelingen en ogenschijnlijk onschuldige technologieën. In dit filmprogramma zie je vijf fascinerende verhalen over (kleinschalig) kwaad: je leert hoe een nepstad in Duitsland wordt gebruikt als trainingsbasis tegen de IRA, hoe een buurt in Syrië uit wraak wordt gesloopt, en over de willekeurige beslissingen die genomen moeten worden door de medewerkers die zelfrijdende auto’s ‘controleren’.
Tin City
In een afgelegen bos in het Noordoosten van Duitsland ligt een vreemd dorp dat niet
bewoond wordt door mensen maar door mannequins. Langzaam draaien ze rond en leunen ze rond een hoek. Tin City staat op geen enkele kaart – want het is een trainingsgebied voor soldaten. Gebouwd als een Noord-Iers dorp, inclusief kerk en pub, voor het trainen van het Britse leger. Maar wie door deze macabere plek dwaalt merkt al snel dat het verleden dichterbij komt dan je misschien zou willen.
The Orchards
In 2015 werd het Basateen al-Razi-district in Damascus volledig met de grond gelijkgemaakt – een vergeldingsactie voor de opstand die er tegen het regime van Assad had plaatsgevonden. Twee voormalige bewoners proberen zich hun oude buurt te herinneren, ooit bekend om de oudste boomgaarden van Damascus. Het regime had grootse plannen voor het gebied: de bouw van een volledig nieuwe stad, Marota City. Als daad van verzet wordt deze geplande stad nu in 3D gereconstrueerd – niet om haar te vieren, maar om er in de virtuele wereld tegen te protesteren.

Hoe maakt een zelfrijdende auto onderscheid tussen een stoep of een kinderwagen? Het
blijkt niet de auto zelf te zijn, maar duizenden arbeiders in het globale zuiden, die van een afstand op hun eigen computer handmatig aangeven of iets een object is of een persoon. Tegelijkertijd zien we hoe ver hun eigen leefomgeving verschilt van de eindeloze stroom foto’s die ze moeten markeren. Een korte film over de verborgen arbeid achter onze luxeproducten.
Bad For a Moment
Wanneer een architectenbureau naar een buitenwijk van de stad reist voor een teambuilding workshop, wordt de eigenaar geconfronteerd met de gevolgen van zijn werk. Bad for a Moment van Daniel Soarez is een vlijmscherpe satire over de hypocrisie rondom woningnood en gentrificatie. Genomineerd voor de Gouden Palm voor beste korte film in Cannes.

De films in dit programma maken de vaak over het hoofd geziene gevolgen van klimaatverandering, de energietransitie en grootschalige infrastructuur zichtbaar. In this film program you will see three fascinating stories about (small-scale) evil: you learn how a fake city in Germany is used as a training base against the IRA, how a neighborhood in Syria is demolished out of revenge, and about the arbitrary decisions that have to be made by the workers who ‘control’ self-driving cars.
Tin City
In a remote forest in the northeast of Germany lies a strange village inhabited not by people but by mannequins. Slowly they turn and lean around a corner. Tin City appears on no map – because it is a training ground for soldiers. Built to resemble a Northern Irish village, complete with church and pub, for the training of the British army. But anyone wandering through this macabre place will soon find that the past
comes closer than one might wish.
The Orchards
In 2015, the Basateen al-Razi district in Damascus was completely razed to the ground – a retaliatory act for the uprising that had taken place there against Assad’s regime. Two former residents try to remember their old neighbourhood, once known for the oldest orchards of Damascus. The regime had grand plans for the area: the construction of an entirely new city, Marota City. As an act of resistance, this planned city is now being reconstructed in 3D – not to celebrate it, but to protest against it in the virtual world.
Their Eyes
How does a self-driving car distinguish between a pavement or a pram? It turns out it is not the car itself, but thousands of workers in the Global South who remotely indicate on their own computers whether something is an object or a person. At the same time, we see how far their own living environment differs from the endless stream of images they have to label. A short film about the hidden labour behind our luxury products.
Bad For a Moment
When an architecture firm travels to a suburb of the city for a team-building workshop, the owner is confronted with the consequences of his work. Bad for a Moment by Daniel Soarez is a biting satire about the hypocrisy surrounding the housing crisis and gentrification. Nominated for the Palme d’Or for Best Short Film at Cannes.

climate change, the energy transition, and large-scale infrastructures.
