Een persoonlijk portret van één van de meest beroemde vrijplaatsen ter wereld: Christiania in Kopenhagen. Vanaf het moment dat de verlaten kazerne werd gekraakt in de jaren zeventig tot aan nu, de documentaire Christiania weet een sterk inhoudelijk onderzoek neer te zetten met zelden gezien archiefbeelden en humoristische animatie. Filmmaker Karl Friis Forchhammer, die er werd geboren, vertelt het verhaal met een speelsheid die hoort bij de intenties van de plek. Hij licht toe hoe het sociale experiment van zelfbeheer volgens anarchistische principes werd neergezet. Een utopisch project dat helaas ook tegen veel problemen aanliep, zoals incidenten van geweld en drugshandel. Ondanks alles bestaat het na vijftig jaar nog steeds. Christiania laat zien dat samenwonen op vele manieren mogelijk is.

From the occupation of an abandoned military barracks in the 1970s to the present day, Christiania combines rarely seen archive footage with humorous animation to create a compelling exploration of the community’s history. Filmmaker Karl Friis Forchhammer, who was born there, tells the story with a sense of playfulness that reflects the spirit of the place itself. He explains how this social experiment in self-governance based on anarchist principles came into being. Although the utopian project faced serious challenges, including violence and drug trafficking, it has survived for more than fifty years. Christiania shows that there are many different ways of living together.
