Two films explore how design research brings diverse stakeholders together to shape complex spatial transitions for the Netherlands of tomorrow, followed by a conversation on collaboration, design and the challenges of practice.

Possible Futures: Designing Tomorrow in the Netherlands

Hoe kunnen we ons de toekomst van Nederland voorstellen als de uitdagingen die voor ons liggen zo complex en onderling verweven zijn? Possible Futures: Designing Tomorrow in the Netherlands bekijkt hoe ontwerponderzoek de grootste ruimtelijke vraagstukken van Nederland tastbaar, zichtbaar en bespreekbaar kan maken. De documentaire volgt vijf teams van ontwerpers die de toekomst van water, landbouw, energie, huisvesting, mobiliteit en zorg onder de loep nemen. Hun werk laat zien dat ontwerponderzoek complexe overgangssituaties kan visualiseren, ons kan helpen om verder vooruit te denken dan in snelle oplossingen en discussies opent over alternatieve manieren om de ruimte te ordenen waarin we leven.

How can we imagine the future of the Netherlands when the challenges ahead are so complex and interconnected? Possible Futures: Designing Tomorrow in the Netherlands explores the potential of design research to make the country’s major spatial questions tangible, visible, and open to debate. The documentary follows five teams of designers as they investigate the future of water, agriculture, energy, housing, mobility, and caring environments. Their work demonstrates that design research can make complex transitions imaginable, help us think beyond immediate solutions, and open up conversations about alternative ways of organising the spaces we live in.

Een verdiepende blik op inspirerende projecten waarin ontwerpers, onderzoekers, overheden en gemeenschappen samenwerken. Met ontwerpgericht onderzoek verbeelden én vormen zij het Nederland van morgen.

In opdracht van het Stimuleringsfonds regisseerde Harm Korst de film Ruimte maken, over de kracht en het belang van ruimtelijk ontwerpend onderzoek. Korst is een ervaren maker en producent van televisieprogramma’s, educatieve video’s en documentaires, veelal in opdracht van omroepen en culturele instellingen en vaak over architectuur en ruimtelijke vraagstukken.

Het Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie is een rijkscultuurfonds voor vormgeving, architectuur, digitale cultuur en de cross-overs daartussen. Het fonds is uitvoeringspartner van het Actieprogramma Ruimtelijk Ontwerp (ARO), een initiatief van de ministeries van OCW en BZK om de inzet van ruimtelijk ontwerp bij transitieopgaven te versterken.

A close look at inspiring projects in which designers, researchers, governments and communities use design research to imagine and shape the Netherlands of tomorrow.

Commissioned by the Creative Industries Fund, Harm Korst directed the film *Ruimte maken* (Making Space), about the power and importance of spatial design research. Korst is an experienced creator and producer of television programmes, educational videos and documentaries, mostly commissioned by broadcasters and cultural institutions and often focusing on architecture and spatial issues.

The Creative Industries Fund is a government cultural fund for design, architecture, digital culture and the crossovers between them. The fund is the implementing partner of the Spatial Design Action Programme (ARO), an initiative of the Ministries of Education, Culture and Science (OCW) and the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK) aimed at strengthening the use of spatial design in transition challenges.
