Future Me - Expat Cinema Rotterdam

Vincent Boy Kars

In this third and final part of Vincent Boy Kars’ millennial trilogy, both Kars himself and Martijn Lakemeier take on the role of Vincent. They engage in dialogue with, among others, Vincent’s mother, his father, his girlfriend Eva, and a therapist, in an attempt to unravel how Vincent has become the person he is today.

“Fiction is the lie through which truth is told,” Vincent says to Eva in the film. As in his previous work, Kars uses fiction to unravel the complexity of being human and our inner world, but ultimately to come closer to himself. The extent to which Future Me is fiction, and where exactly the boundary lies between Vincent the director and Vincent the character, is sometimes difficult to determine.

In Future Me, Kars dares to be more vulnerable than ever before, and for the first time, he makes us part of his own emotional struggles. The way he does this resonates far beyond the confines of the cinematic universe he has created in recent years. The end result is Kars’ most personal, intimate, and layered film to date.
