Raine Karp is de architect van de Linnahall in Tallinn – het iconische gebouw in de hoofdstad van Estland. Maar hij heeft ook tal van minder bekende werken door het hele land op zijn naam staan. Dit intieme portret volgt de beroemde architect door de ideeën en de gebouwen die bij elkaar een heel leven in ontwerpen laten zien. Via gesprekken met collega’s, historici en cliënten brengt de film Karps bijdrage aan de architectonische identiteit van Estland in beeld, en plaatst deze in de context van de sociale en politieke omstandigheden waarin zijn werk is ontstaan. Karp is ook nog eens een geestige en bescheiden persoon, wat dit tot een echt verfrissend portret van een architect maakt.
Raine Karp is the architect of Tallinn’s Linnahall, the iconic building that defines the Estonian capital. But he is also the architect of numerous lesser-known works across the country. This intimate portrait follows the acclaimed architect through the ideas and buildings that compose a lifetime of designing. Through conversations with colleagues, historians and clients, the film traces Karp’s contribution to Estonias’s architectural identity and contextualises it in the social and political conditions in which it emerged. Karp is witty and modest, which makes this film a truly refreshing portrait of an architect.

Het is het gloednieuwe Josephine Baker – Marie-Jose Perec Sports and Cultural Centre, een plek waar alle bewoners kunnen samenkomen onder een ademend dak van textiel. The Cathedral laat zien hoe dit bijzondere gebouw door de dorpsbewoners wordt beleefd. Als vreemde punt in de rij vandaken, lichtpunt aan de horizon als de zon onder gaat én als plek om te sporten. Voor de gemeenschap blijkt het van onschatbare waarde.
In a village in Brittany, a gigantic luminous tent rises from the ground. It is the brand-new Josephine Baker – Marie-Jose Perec Sports and Cultural Centre, a place where all the residents can come together beneath a breathable textile roof. The Cathedral shows how the villagers experience this remarkable building: as an unusual punctuation mark in the line of rooftops, a beacon on the horizon as the sun sets and a place to play sports. It proves invaluable to the community.
