Kokomo City
Kokomo City opent donderdag 7 december om 20:00 het Black Soil Film Festival. Voorafgaand worden er twee korte films vertoond: de korte documentaires The In_Between en This Place We Rule.
Kokomo City. geregisseerd door voormalig hiphopproducent D. Smith en uitvoerend geproduceerd door Lena Waithe, vertelt het verhaal van vier zwarte transvrouwen en hun ervaringen als sekswerkers in New York en Georgia. Door middel van heropvoeringen en interviews met hen en hun cliënten schetst de documentaire een inzichtelijk portret van de hedendaagse zwarte genderidentiteit in de Verenigde Staten.
D. Smith was een Grammy Award-winnende songwriter en producer, en werkte samen met artiesten als Lil’ Wayne, André 3000 en Ciara. Nadat ze in 2014 uit de kast kwam als transgender, viel de muziekcarrière van D. Smith uiteen. Ze vond zichzelf opnieuw uit als actrice en filmmaker, verscheen in de show Love & Hip Hop en creëerde Kokomo City, waarvoor ze regisseur, cameraman, castingdirecteur, redacteur en producer was.
Kokomo City ging in première op het Sundance Festival in 2023 en won de NEXT Audience and Innovator Awards. De film ontving ook de Panorama Audience Award op het 73e Internationale Filmfestival van Berlijn.
Directed by former hip hop producer D. Smith and executive produced by Lena Waithe, Kokomo City tells the story of four Black trans women and their experiences as sex workers in New York and Georgia. Through reenactments and interviews with them and their clients, the documentary paints an insightful portrait of contemporary Black gendered identity.
Kokomo City premiered at the Sundance Festival in 2023, winning the NEXT Audience and Innovator Awards. Kokomo City will be preceded by two short films: The In_Between, a short documentary that tells the story of Mr. Moxie, a trans masculine B. And This Place We Rule about Elejandro Martinez, Father of the House of Vineyard, who takes you on a visual journey through the beating heart of the ballroom community.
