Levante - Expat Cinema Rotterdam
Sofia (a fantastic performance by Ayomi Domenica Dias) is the star of the volleyball team at her high school. Just before a crucial match, she discovers she is pregnant. During her quest for the possibility of an illegal abortion, she becomes the target of right-wing activists who seek to prevent women and girls from having abortions. Sofia does not succumb to the pressure and finds strength and support from her teammates’ unwavering friendship.
Levante is filmmaker Lillah Halla’s debut film, premiering at the Cannes Film Festival 2023 and screening at IFFR 2024. The film delicately navigates between accepting reality and yearning for change, and serves as a powerful call for inclusivity over intolerance. The support from her non-binary and female volleyball team is a condemnation of conservatism as well as a celebration of friendship and inclusivity.
