Materiality of Tech

Various Directors

New technology changes our society in many ways, including the buildings around us.

World Machine

In this visually stunning science-fiction film essay, Liam Young imagines a near future where Earth has been redesigned to power artificial intelligence. Mountains, rivers and deserts become part of a planetary-scale computer, transforming into solar fields and wind farms; a physical architecture that serves a world where artificial intelligence has taken over. Combining spectacular CGI with live-action footage, World Machine invites us to question the immense environmental footprint of digital technologies.

Building for the Quantum

A strange new structure is rising in Spain. It will house one of the world’s first quantum computers. Building for Quantum follows its construction and explores the hopes and dreams invested in this emerging technology. But what does quantum architecture actually look like? From ordinary bricks and concrete to the extraordinary precision required for a chamber maintained at temperatures close to absolute zero, the film asks what physical and philosophical challenges must be overcome.

Big Tech Blues

What happens when the ambitions of a global technology giant land in a tiny, remote village in sub-Arctic Norway? The filmmaker’s former school becomes the unlikely target for one of Elon Musk’s Space X Starlink gateway stations, just one more node in a global system of terrestrial stations that connect satellites to the fiber optic internet network on land. The purchase of the building sparks a personal investigation into what needs to be sacrificed in the name of accelerating digital transformation and what needs to be defended. A vivid illustration of the relationship between place and technology, of the confrontation between community values and the ever expanding presence of Big Tech, and ultimately a hopeful message about resistance.
