De atmosfeer is er vergiftigd, de grond zwaar verontreinigd, het kwik daalt er in de winter onder de min veertig graden en zes maanden in het jaar komt de zon nauwelijks boven de horizon. Norilisk is de noordelijkste stad van Siberië, boven de poolcirkel en omringd door toendra’s. Gebouwd door dwangarbeiders onder Stalin om er de kostbare metalen uit de grond te kunnen halen. Een beklemmende film over het leven ineen onmogelijke stad. Maar ook, een loflied op de Russische ziel want, zo zegt een bewoonster, overal is er wel wat. Hartverscheurend mooi!

The air is toxic, the soil is severely contaminated, the thermometers plunge below -40 degrees in the winter, and the sun hardly peeks over the horizon six months of the year. Norilisk is the northern most city in Siberia, located above the Arctic Circle and surrounded by tundra. Under Stalin, the city was built by forced labour so the precious metals could be mined from the ground nearby. A gripping film about life in an impossible city – but also a tribute to the Russian soul. As a woman living in Norilisk says, there’s something happening all over town. Heartbreakingly beautiful!
