Nederlands Fotomuseum – Van der Keuken and his view of the city
Frits Gierstberg, curator Fotomuseum en samensteller van de nieuwe tentoonstelling over Nederlandse fotograaf en documentairemaker Johan van der Keuken, geeft een filmische lezing over de manier waarop Van der Keuken in zijn werk naar de stad kijkt. Na afloop vertonen we Van der Keukens korte film Vier Muren. Op 7 oktober opent het Fotomuseum een grote tentoonstelling met het werk van Johan van der Keuken, o.a. bekend van de epische documentaire Amsterdam Global Village uit 1996. In het levendige werk van Van der Keuken staat vooral de humanistische blik centraal staat. Vier Muren is een filmisch essay over de woningnood in Amsterdam, midden jaren zestig. De film legt een visueel verband tussen lichamelijke en geestelijke ruimte, en is verrassend herkenbaar in de context van de hedendaagse huizencrisis.
Frits Gierstberg, curator at the Fotomuseum and compiler of the new exhibition about Dutch photographer and documentary maker Johan van der Keuken, gives a lecture about the way in which Van der Keuken looks at the city in his work. The lecture is followed by a screening of Van der Keuken’s 1960 short film about the housing crisis, entitled Vier Muren. On 7 October the Fotomuseum opens a major exhibition of work by Johan van der Keuken, whose celebrated films include the epic documentary Amsterdam Global Village of 1996. Van der Keuken’s vibrant work centres on a humanistic perspective. Vier Muren is a cinematic essay about the housing crisis in Amsterdam in the mid-1960s. The film makes a visual connection between physical and mental space, and is surprisingly relevant within the context of today’s housing crisis.
