For the opening of AFFR 2026 we travel to Tokyo, with the Dutch premiere of Numakage Public Pool by Shingo Ota, a tender and bittersweet portrait of a beloved public swimming pool, given with warmth, humour and beautiful imagery. Al bijna vijftig jaar is het openbare zwembad van Numakage, een buitenwijk van Tokio, een geliefde sociale verzamelplek. Nu het gebied ontwikkeld gaat worden is het echter aftellen tot de sloop. Via de vijf stadia van rouw (ontkenning, woede, onderhandelen, depressie en acceptatie) brengt regisseur Shingo Ota een bitterzoete ode aan dit publieke gebouw en de rol die het speelt in het leven van veel mensen. Door ouders, werknemers, buren en de locale gay gemeenschap wordt namelijk massaal geprotesteerd. Met prachtige beelden en gevoel voor humor schets Numakage Public Pool een levendig portret van een wonderbaarlijke microkosmos.
For almost fifty years, the public swimming pool in Numakage, a suburb of Tokyo, has been a beloved social meeting place. Now that the area is set for redevelopment, the countdown to its demolition has begun. Through the five stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance), director Shingo Ota creates a bittersweet tribute to this public building and the role it has played in so many lives. Parents, workers, neighbors and the local gay community have all come together in protest. With striking imagery and a keen sense of humor, Numakage Public Pool paints a vibrant portrait of an extraordinary microcosm.
