Radical - Expat Cinema Rotterdam
Teacher Sergio Correa (played by Eugenio Derbez) arrives at his new school in the Mexican city of Matamoros, situated near the border with Texas, full of optimism. The passionate educator quickly discovers that the school lacks resources—its computers were stolen four years ago and never replaced—and even less enthusiasm exists among the youth to learn: the region is plagued by gangs, the children often come from difficult home situations, and they achieve the lowest test scores in the country. He decides to completely overhaul the system and employ ‘radical’ methods to inspire his students and offer them a better future.
Radical is based on a true story, beautifully portrayed by the charming young cast and lead Mexican superstar Eugenio Derbez, who also played a teacher in the Oscar-winning film Coda. This inspiring indictment against convention won the Festival Favorite Award at the Sundance Film Festival and the LIFF Audience Award at the Leiden International Film Festival.
