Some Kind of Refuge
Op de battures van de Mississippi, zandbanken die onder constante dreiging van overstromingen staan, woont een gemeenschap van zonderlinge buitenstaanders. Zij wonen hier zonder moderne gemakken maar als levend deel van de natuur om hen heen. Het hartverwarmende Some Kind of Refuge van jonge filmmaker Alexandra Kern volgt twee oudere mannen die hier hun thuis hebben gebouwd. De veranderlijke vorm van de rivier is een vitaal onderdeel van hun bestaan.
On the battures of the Mississippi, the sandbanks that are under constant threat of flooding, lives a community of eccentric outsiders. They live without modern comforts, existing as an integral part of the natural world around them. Young filmmaker Alexandra Kern’s heartwarming Some Kind of Refuge follows two elderly men who have built their home there. The river’s ever-changing course is an essential part of their lives.

De nieuwe Groene Ark in Plantentuin Meise is ontworpen om bedreigde plantensoorten te beschermen in het licht van de wereldwijde crisis in de biodiversiteit. Het biedt een nauwkeurig gecontroleerde omgeving waarin zeldzame soorten kunnen overleven, en bestudeerd kunnen worden. ARK volgt architecten, ingenieurs en bouwvakkers gedurende het bouwproces, en legt parallellen tussen bouwen en conservatie. De film laat zien hoe ingewikkeld het is om een ruimte te creëren die er primair is om te voorzien in de behoeften van planten. In een tijd waarin ecologische uitdagingen onze relatie tot de natuur veranderen, moet de architectuur een actieve rol op zich gaan nemen om de biodiversiteit te beschermen.
The new ‘Green Ark’ at Meise Botanic Garden is designed to protect endangered plant species in the face of a global biodiversity crisis, by providing a carefully controlled environment where rare species can survive and be studied. Following architects, engineers and builders throughout the construction process, ARK draws parallels between the processes of construction and conservation, and reveals the complexity behind creating a space that caters primarily to plants’ needs. As environmental challenges reshape our relationship to nature, architecture needs to assume an active role in protecting biodiversity.

Wat als we lava zouden kunnen gebruiken als duurzame bouwstof? Lavaforming neemt je mee naar honderd jaar in de toekomst. In het fictieve stadje Eldborg in IJsland zijn de gebouwen gemaakt in de stijl van vulkanisch brutalisme. Er is zoveel lava dat de mooiste structuren gemaakt kunnen worden. We leren hoe de mensen leven in deze bijzondere omgeving. Een speculatieve sciencefictionfilm over een hoopvolle toekomst zonder schadelijke extractie, aangedreven door hernieuwbare energie.

In the fictional Icelandic town of Eldborg, buildings are constructed in a style of volcanic Brutalism. With an abundance of lava available, extraordinary new structures can be created.
