ROD INVITES is a collaborative program with Rotterdam partners, featuring a curated selection from IFFR by the IFFR Young Selectors. This group comprises Elliot, a Chilean-Korean graduate, Yasemin, an AV design advocate for challenging cinema, Julia, a Jewish Russian storyteller promoting unity, and Zonne, a Dutch/Surinamese creative exploring human behavior through film to foster connection.
Join the IFFR Young Selectors on Saturday, June 15, at Rotterdams Open Doek for an evening exploring the scary and disturbing world of horror cinema! Embark on a journey to explore the genre’s artistic potential alongside filmmakers, producers, and fellow audience members. The program aims to illuminate both the challenges and opportunities for aspiring Dutch genre filmmakers, offering insights and discussions.
To kickstart this conversation, the Young Selectors have curated two Dutch films from the IFFR 2024 lineup. We begin with ‘Binary,’ a body-horror film about a trans woman from Pakistan working as a dancer in the Netherlands. We then conclude with ‘Wander to Wonder,’ a sinister stop-motion film exploring the anguish of abandoned TV show puppets. Both films show how the wheel can be reinvented while still playing with familiar genre tropes. In a discussion with the filmmakers and horror enthusiasts, our panel will delve into what makes these films -and the horror genre as a whole- so profound and intriguing.
