ROD Invites: Queer Cinema
We’ve invited Queer Cinema to curate a special program for the Rotterdams Open Doek Film Festival. Queer Cinema is LantarenVenster’s monthly film night dedicated to showcasing the best queer feature films, providing a platform for queer creators, and celebrating the diversity and creativity of the LGBTQI+ community. This time, we’re presenting five short films, followed by Q&As with the filmmakers themselves. You are warmly invited!
Program
On Hold – Prins de Vos
On Hold explores the experiences of individuals waiting for gender-affirming care in the Netherlands. With an average waiting time of three years at academic gender clinics, the film delves into the emotional and psychological toll of this prolonged wait. Through the intimate stories of four individuals, On Hold sheds light on their struggles, hopes, and the impact of living in limbo as they await their first consultations. This powerful narrative not only highlights the urgent need for accessible care but also amplifies the voices of those whose lives are currently on hold.
Groeipijn – Jottum Kok
During a camping holiday, childhood friends Marlon (16) and Oscar (16) are confronted with new feelings that strain their friendship. While Oscar seeks to bond with a group of older boys, Marlon tries to keep his friend close at all costs.
Yildiz – Ayla Çekin Satijn
Yildiz, a Turkish-Dutch girl, seeks meaning and hope amid her chaotic home life with a manic, self-destructive mother. Escaping into fantasy, she lip-syncs in her pink princess room while arguments rage downstairs. A message at school — “God can help” — leads her to secretly pray in a church, longing for peace. But when she mentions communion, her mother lashes out. In her fantasy, she is safe, powerful, and watches over everyone — high in the clouds — as the star she was always meant to be.
Heart Murmurs – Dorothy Cheung
Heart Murmurs is a poetic dialogue between the filmmaker and Dean, a young man living in Hong Kong. In reflecting on his experience living with a congenital disability and HIV during the first years of the COVID pandemic, the film questions the boundary of care and control in relationships.
Rood Bloed – Gaby Hoekstra
