Met zijn programma the Voice of Africa verwoordt gitarist Vuma Levin het veelzijdige culturele verhaal van het Zuid-Afrika van de eenentwintigste eeuw.
Levins muziek bestaat uit een rijk harmonisch palet van hedendaagse jazz, Zuid-Afrikaanse traditionals, popmuziek, digitale samples en loops. Volgens eigen zeggen verkent Levin een nieuwe identiteit in de Afrikaanse diaspora en schildert hij een muzikaal portret van zijn geboorteland dat eigentijds en toch nauw verbonden is met vele rijke historische tradities. Vuma Levin studeerde aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam en speelt met een multicultureel gezelschap van vijf aanstormende en meermaals bekroonde muzikanten uit de Nederlandse scene.
Sinds de oprichting in 2014 heeft het kwintet opgetreden op verschillende locaties en festivals in Zuid-Afrika en Europa, waaronder de befaamde jazzclub The Orbit in Johannesburg. Vuma Levin won al vele prijzen waaronder de Nederlandse jazzcompetitie en meerdere malen The Keep an Eye Jazz Award.

With his programme The Voice of Africa, guitarist Vuma Levin expresses the multifaceted story of South Africa in the 21st century. Levin’s music consists of a richly harmonic palette of contemporary jazz, South African traditionals, pop music, digital samples and loops. Levin himself says he is exploring a new identity in the African diaspora and painting a musical portrait of his native country that is both contemporary and yet closely connected with many rich historical traditions. Vuma Levin studied at the Conservatorium in Amsterdam and plays with a multicultural ensemble of five emerging and multi-award-winning musicians from the Dutch scene. Since its formation in 2014, the quintet has performed at various venues and festivals in South Africa and Europe, including The Orbit, the renowned jazz club in Johannesburg. Vuma Levin has won many prizes, including the Dutch jazz competition and on various occasions the Keep an Eye Jazz Award.
