Nino en Yasmina kenden elkaar als kinderen in Beiroet, maar verloren elkaar uit het oog. Nu zijn ze in de twintig en kruisen hun wegen opnieuw – in een stad die bezwijkt onder politieke onrust en economische ineenstorting. Hun hereniging is zowel komisch als pijnlijk, vol de onuitgesproken beloftes van wie ze ooit hadden kunnen zijn.
Regisseur Cyril Aris maakt met deze romantische komedie tegelijkertijd een portret van het hedendaagse Libanon. Zijn film is vol droge humor en echte pijn, en weigert te kiezen tussen hoop en wanhoop. Beiroet wordt hier een personage op zichzelf: kwetsbaar, absurd en onvermijdelijk aantrekkelijk.
A Sad and Beautiful World won de publieksprijs in het programmaonderdeel Giornate degli Autori van het Filmfestival van Venetië 2025 en was Libanons officiële inzending voor de Academy Awards. Met in de hoofdrollen Hasan Akil en Mounia Akl.
Nino and Yasmina were childhood friends in Beirut who lost touch. Now in their twenties, their paths cross again in a city buckling under political unrest and economic collapse. Their reunion is at once funny and painful, full of the unspoken promises of who they might have been.
Director Cyril Aris turns this romantic comedy into a portrait of contemporary Lebanon — full of dry humour, real pain and a refusal to choose between hope and despair. A Sad and Beautiful World won the People’s Choice Award at Venice Days 2025 and was Lebanon’s official submission for the Academy Awards.
