Divine Location
Jarenlang is het project Phoenix Meer in Dortmund gefilmd. Op de plaats van een oude staalfabriek wordt een groot meer aangelegd; het moet een goddelijke locatie worden. Het project staat symbool voor de transformatie van de industriële naar de vrijetijdsmaatschappij, maar ondertussen wordt een heel ander verhaal gefilmd.
Loeken en Franke filmden eerder al Losers&Winners (bij AFFR in 2007) over de verplaatsing van een hoogoven van het Ruhrgebied naar China. Op dezelfde precieze en intrigerende manier filmden ze nu hoe de situatie verandert en hoe de lokale gemeenschap daarop reageert. Het meer is er vooral voor de nieuwe, zorgeloze bewoners.
Terecht twijfelt de bestaande gemeenschap wat ze nu helemaal met die investering opschieten.
For years the project Phoenix Meer was filmed in Dortmund. The site of a former steel factory became the site for a new lake; it was to be a divine location. The project symbolizes the transformation of an industrial to a leisure society, but for all that, a totally different story is filmed.
Loeken and Franke previously filmed Losers and Winners (screened at AFFR in 2007) about the relocation of a blast-furnace from the Ruhr Area to China. In the same precise and intriguing way, they film how the situation changes and how the local community responds. The lake is there largely for the new, carefree residents.
The existing community rightly wonders what they achieve with all that investment.
