From ukiyo-e to hanga
Japanse houtblokprenten fascineren al eeuwenlang mensen over heel de wereld. Sinds de zeventiende eeuw maakte men met ukiyo-e (letterlijk: beelden van de drijvende wereld) traditionele beelden van Japan, maar door ontwikkelingen in de houtblokdrukkerij kwam dit bekend te staan als hanga (letterlijk: prentenblok), met daarop modernistische expressies van hedendaagse cultuur. Via een chronologisch overzicht geeft deze tentoonstelling een introductie tot de meest iconische kunstenaars en genres van deze boeiende kunstvorm.
For a long time, Japanese woodblock prints have intrigued audiences all over the world. Since the 17th century ukiyo-e (lit. images of the floating world) served traditional imagery of Japan, but as woodblock printing evolved, in the 20th century it became known as hanga (lit. printing block/plate picture), which contained modernistic expressions of contemporary culture. In a chronological overview, this exhibition provides an introduction to the most iconic artists and genres known to this captivating art form.
