Losing Alaska is een beklemmend verhaal over de drastische gevolgen van klimaatverandering. Vanwege de stijgende zeespiegel verdwijnt Newtok, Alaska langzaam in de zee. Het dorp met 375 inwoners van de inheemse Yup’ik wist jarenlang te overleven door middel van traditionele jacht en visserij. Nu dreigt het letterlijk in de zee te zinken. Terwijl de grond onder hun voeten verdwijnt wordt de situatie steeds nijpender. Moet het dorp hun hechte gemeenschap opgeven en naar de stad verhuizen of kan het op stevige grond in de buurt blijven wonen? Met zijn film maakt Tom Burke de klimaatcrisis op een unieke manier zichtbaar en brengt hij het angstaanjagend dichtbij.
Losing Alaska is a haunting story about the drastic consequences of climate change. Owing to rising sea levels, Newtok in Alaska is slowing sinking into the sea. With a population of 375, the village of the native Yup’ik people managed to survive for years through traditional hunting and fishing. Now it’s literally disappearing into the sea. As the ground disappears beneath their feet, the situation for residents becomes increasingly acute. Should they abandon their tight-knit community and relocate to the city? Or can they continue to live on solid ground nearby? Filmmaker Tom Burke makes the climate change crisis visible in unique fashion and brings it frighteningly close to home.
