Planeta Petrila

De kolenmijn van het Roemeense stadje Petrila is meer dan een mijn. Voor de bewoners van de stad is het hun leven, hun bron van inkomsten en centrale spil van de sociale samenhang. Maar de mijn moet dicht en de Europese regelgeving verplicht tot totale sloop. Oud-mijnwerker en kunstenaar Ion Barbuzet zet alles op alles om de sloop van de mijn te voorkomen. Hij zet zijn kunst in om de spirit van de mijn levend te houden met absurde beelden als gevolg. “Europe is just a continent. Petrila is a world”.

The coal mine in the Romanian town of Petrila is more than a mine. To the city’s inhabitants, it is their life, their source of income, and the pivotal point of the community. But the mine is closing down, and European regulations dictate total demolition. Former mineworker and artist Ion Barbudecides decides to make every effort to prevent the mine’s destruction. He uses his art to keep the spirit of the mine alive, resulting in absurd imagery. “Europe is just a continent. Petrila is a world.”
