Samouni Road
In de landelijke rand rond Gaza-Stad maakt de familie Samouni zich op om een huwelijk te vieren. Het wordt het eerste feest sinds de laatste oorlog. Amal, zijn broers en hun neven raakten daarbij hun ouders, hun thuis en hun olijfbomen kwijt. Ze planten nieuwe bomen en bewerken het land, maar er staat de jonge overlevenden nog een veel moeilijkere taak te wachten: hun herinneringen een plaats geven. Aan de hand daarvan schetst Samouni Road een familieportret vóór, tijdens en na de gebeurtenis die hun leven voorgoed heeft veranderd.
In de documentaire gebruikt de Italiaanse filmmaker animatiebeelden om de meest ondraaglijke scènes te reconstrueren en om de 29 vermiste familieleden, zowel volwassenen als kinderen, te doen herleven. Zwart-wittekeningen worden afgewisseld met interviews en doen een bewogen geschiedenis herleven.
Het heeft negen jaar geduurd voor de film klaar was. In 2018 won Samouni Road de documentaire prijs ‘l’Oeil d’Or’ op het filmfestival van Cannes.
In the rural outskirts of Gaza City, the Samouni family prepares to celebrate a wedding. It will be the first party since the last war. Amal, his brothers and their cousins lost their parents, their home and their olive trees. They plant new trees and cultivate the land, but there is still a much more difficult task left for the young survivors: giving memories a place. Based on this, Samouni Road (2018, Stefano Savona) sketches a family portrait before, during and after the event that has changed their lives forever.
In the documentary, the Italian filmmaker uses animated images to reconstruct the most unbearable scenes and to revive the 29 missing relatives, both adults and children. Black and white drawings alternate with interviews and revive a moving history.
It took nine years finish the film. In 2018 Samouni Road won the documentary prize ‘l’Oeil d’Or’ at the Cannes Film Festival.
