Seven-year-old Sol spends the day at her grandfather’s old house, while her loving family is busy preparing a grand surprise party for Sol’s father Tona.

On this sweltering day, her spirited aunts prepare everything to give him an unforgettable birthday, while she entertains herself with all the animals and critters in and around the house. As the sun sets and guests trickle in, the joyful bustle gives way to an elusive melancholy. The party brims with love but also has a bittersweet undertaste.

This second, now multi-award-winning feature from Mexican director Lila Avilés is a more than worthy successor to her 2019 debut feature La camarista. Tótem celebrates life intimately and shows how each deals differently with letting go, while at the same time trying to enjoy every second of life. The film had its world premiere at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival competition.
