Calle Malaga - Expat Cinema Rotterdam
Calle Málaga tells the story of María Ángeles, a 74-year-old woman of Spanish origin who enjoys a quiet life in the vibrant Moroccan coastal city of Tangier.
One day, her daughter Clara, a nurse living in Madrid, unexpectedly arrives at her doorstep. Emotionally adrift and struggling financially, Clara has decided to sell the family home—the house where María has lived her entire life. As she tries to resist her daughter’s decision, María rediscovers the city around her and finds an unexpected romantic spark that will change her life.
Director Maryam Touzani, who previously earned widespread acclaim with Adam (2019) and The Blue Caftan (2022), co-wrote the screenplay with her husband, director Nabil Ayouch. The story was inspired by Touzani’s grandmother, who fled to Morocco in the 1950s to escape the dictatorship of Francisco Franco.
Spanish screen legend Carmen Maura, best known for her collaborations with Pedro Almodóvar, brings warmth and charm to the role. The result is a heartfelt film that paints a beautiful portrait of Tangier while exploring the meaning of home, family ties, love, and friendship.
