Ouvidor in São Paulo is het grootste kunstenaarskraakpand van Zuid-Amerika. 120 kunstenaars toverden het 13 verdiepingen tellende gebouw om tot een kleurrijke broedplaats voor graffitikunstenaars, theatermakers en activisten. De diverse groep antikapitalisten en anarchisten, ontstaan uit een gezamenlijke strijd tegen het tekort aan woon- en werkruimte, moet hier hun verschillen overbruggen.
Regisseur Matias Borgström schetst een eerlijk beeld van deze worsteling. Hij toont de vele gesprekken en ruzies die voortkomen uit de ‘horizontale participatie’, een meer directe vorm van democratie. Daarnaast leggen onderhandelingen met de politie en de buurt, en de constante dreiging van ontruiming, extra druk op de gemeenschap. Ondanks deze hindernissen is Ouvidor is een speelse en creatieve documentaire, die de mogelijkheid voor een alternatieve gemeenschap verkent.
Ouvidor in São Paulo is the largest artist squat in South America. 120 artists transformed the 13-storey building into a colourful breeding ground for graffiti artists, theatre makers andactivists. The diverse group of anti-capitalists and anarchists, born from a shared struggle against the shortage of living and working space, must find ways to bridge their differences.
Director Matias Borgström paints an honest picture of this struggle. He shows the many conversations and arguments that arise from ‘horizontal participation’, a more direct form of democracy. In addition, negotiations with the police and the neighbourhood, and the constant threat of eviction, put further pressure on the community. Despite these obstacles, Ouvidor is a playful and creative documentary that explores the possibility of an alternative community.
