Een terugblik op Rotterdam als Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa, precies 25 jaar geleden. Wat gebeurde er toen precies in Rotterdam en wat betekende dit voor de architectuurcultuur van de stad? Aan de hand van korte films, filmfragmenten en een paneldiscussie onder leiding van filmmaker Karim Ouri duiken we in de stedelijke identiteit van Rotterdam en de rol die architectuurcultuur daarin speelt.

De film volgt stadsdichter van Rotterdam Manu, die op een dag tegen Pergola aanloopt. Dit tijdelijke houten paviljoen, ontworpen door Studio Inscape, is een curieuze kruising tussen een tuinhuisje en een plek om de menselijke en niet-menselijke ecologie van het Museumpark te verkennen. Pergola nodigt bezoekers uit om de aarde onder zich, de planten,de vleermuizen en de mensen die er doorheen gaan in zich op te nemen. Manu denkt na over zijn eigen relatie tot de stad, en verweeft zijn persoonlijke herinneringen met observaties over zijn omgeving

Heerlen kampte lange tijd met een minderwaardigheidscomplex. De mijnsluiting in de jaren ’70, gevolgd door een drugscrisis, tastte het zelfbeeld van de stad en haar inwoners flink aan. Maar wat is Heerlen anno 2025? Door volop ruimte te geven aan internationale streetart kunstenaars, werkt de stad aan een nieuw imago als Street Art Capital. Toch blijft de vraag: welke plek is er nog voor makers van eigen bodem?

The film follows Rotterdam city poet Manu, who stumbles upon Pergola, a temporary wooden pavilion designed by Studio Inscape. Pergola is a curious mix bewteen a garden shedand a place to encounter the human and non-human ecologies of the Museumpark. The pavilion invites visitors to notice the soil beneath, the plants, the bats and the people who pass through. Manu reflects on his own relationship with the city, weaving his personal memories with observations about his surroundings.

Heerlen struggled for a long time with a sense of inferiority. The closure of the mines in the 1970s, followed by a drug crisis, took a heavy toll on the city’s and its residents’ self-image. But what is Heerlen like in 2025? By giving international street artists plenty of space, the city is working on a new identity as the Street Art Capital. Yet the question remains: what space is left for local creators?
