Het is 1982. De Franse president François Mitterrand schrijft een wedstrijd uit voor een nieuw monument op La Défense, als onderdeel van zijn megalomane Grands Projets, acht monumenten om het 200-jarig bestaan van de Franse republiek te vieren.
Onverwacht wint de tot dan toe onbekende Deense architect Johan Otto von Spreckelsen, gespeeld door Claes Bang (The Square). Samen met zijn vrouw en zakenpartner Liv, Sidse Babett Knudsen (Borgen), gaat hij naar Parijs om het project te realiseren. Door een moeizame samenwerking met architect Paul Andreu komt zijn ‘kubus’, zoals hij het project liefdevol noemt, steeds verder in problemen. De idealistische Deen komt vast te zitten in een web van politieke intriges.

Unexpectedly, the until then unknown Danish architect Johan Otto von Spreckelsen played by Claes Bang (The Square) wins. Together with his wife and business partner Liv, Sidse Babett Knudsen (Borgen), hemoves to Paris to realise the project. Due to a difficult collaboration with architect Paul Andreu, his ‘cube’, as he lovingly calls the project, gets into increasing trouble. The idealistic Dane becomes trapped in a web of political intrigue.
Director Stéphane Demoustier’s elegant film The Great Arch, based on Laurence Cossé’s book La Grande Arche, tells the true story of Von Spreckelsen without too much melodrama and with attention to detail.
