Omer Avital komt terug naar LantarenVenster om de muziek van zijn nieuwe album Qantar voor te stellen. De sinds 1992 in New York wonende bassist is een van de opvallendste muzikanten uit Israël, en medeverantwoordelijk voor het op de jazzkaart zetten van zijn geboorteland. Critici van Downbeat en The New York Times prijzen de klassiek getrainde virtuoos de hemel in en hij wordt zelfs de Israëlische Charles Mingus genoemd. Avital is een visionair die zijn culturele roots mengt met moderne westerse jazz. Dat levert een fraaie atmosfeer op van aanstekelijke Midden-Oosten-grooves, subtiele jazzmelodieën en orkestrale arrangementen van Sefardische composities. Op Avitals albums gaan twee culturen vreugdevol samen in eindeloze kleuren en ritmes, en oosterse melodieën ademen de passie van gospel en soul. “Trained first as a classical guitarist, he plays chords all over the neck and uses guitar techniques for strumming; the result is a passing hint of flamenco or blues. He can be fleet and jazz-melodic in the style of Oscar Pettiford, then buzz around the tonic like a devotional singer; he grew up in Tel Aviv, in a Moroccan-Yemenite family, and the Arabic and Spanish comes together with the blues in his music. Proper technique isn’t all; he punches and twangs the strings, knocking fresh slang out of the bass.
