De speelse vrijheid van Ferde Grofé’s compositie ‘On The Trail’ illustreert perfect de sfeer die Walter Smith voor ogen had voor zijn album TWIO. In een intense samenwerking met zijn ervaren bandleden presenteert de in Californië woonachtige tenorsaxofonist zijn eigen verhelderende visie op het saxofoontrio.
De in Texas geboren Smith (1980) leerde op 7-jarige leeftijd saxofoon spelen en bezocht in Houston de High School for the Performing Arts. Met een Clifford Brown/Stan Getz Fellowship vertrok hij naar het Berklee College of Music. Hij won de Young Talent Award van de National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, en in 2002 ontving hij de publieksprijs van het Montreux Jazz Festival. Walter vertrok naar New York om zijn studie te vervolgen aan de Manhattan School of Music.
Hij werkte met Roy Haynes, Ralph Peterson, Bilal en Destiny’s Child en toerde met Herbie Hancock en Wayne Shorter. Ook speelde hij op Christian Scotts album Rewind That en het album Caught in the Act van Michael Bublé. In 2006 verscheen zijn eerste soloalbum Casually Introducing, met o.a. Eric Harland. Op maandag 11 mei komt Walter Smith eindelijk naar LantarenVenster om de prachtige muziek van zijn TWIO te presenteren.
