Toch biedt de stad onderdak aan 2200 mensen. Nog wel, want de stad wordt in zijn bestaan bedreigd. Niet alleen de kolenindustrie van het eiland dreigt failliet te gaan, ook de klimaatverandering is een serieuze bedreiging. Maar waarom vertrekken de bewoners niet? Wat bezielt hen hun geluk te zoeken op een plek waar het ’s winters 24 uur per dag donker is, bij een temperatuur van min veertig graden Celsius? Zoals Sasha, een van de geportretteerden, het in de film zegt: “a Russian is not a person who is not afraid of cold. A Russian is the one who puts on warm clothes.” Geluk is overal te vinden.

What drives them to seek their fortunes in a place where it’s dark 24 hours a day all winter, at temperatures around -40 degrees Celsius? As one of the inhabitants, Sasha, says in the film, “A Russian is not a person who is notafraid of cold. A Russian is the one who puts on warm clothes.” Happiness is found in all sorts of unlikely locations.
