Met zijn streven naar het geluk van de arbeiders ontwierp Michel de Klerk het Schip voor woningbouwvereniging Eigen Haard. Sociale woningbouw in een flamboyante expressionistische stijl ter verheffing van de arbeider. Het ontwerp uit 1917 werd onlangs helemaal gerenoveerd. Een ingewikkelde klus die in deze film wordt gevolgd. Hoe kan de schoonheid van het oorspronkelijke ontwerp weer worden teruggebracht? En hoe kan de vorige renovatie uit begin jaren tachtig weer teniet worden gedaan? De film laat de complexe operatie zien, en laat je beetje bij beetje meer verliefd worden op Het Schip.
