Tokyo Godfathers
In samenwerking met Camera Japan presenteren we op dinsdag 24 maart een éénmalige vertoning van Tokyo Godfathers, met voorafgaand aan de film een lezing over anime.
One Christmas Eve, three homeless people – a middle-aged alcoholic named Gin, a former drag queen named Hana, and a dependent runaway girl named Miyuki – discover an abandoned newborn while searching through the garbage. A search for the parents of the child ensues; during their efforts their past catches up with them as they learn to look ahead to the future.
Tokyo Godfathers is a modern classic by Satoshi Kon, on of the renowned directors of Japanese animation. Kon, who passed away in 2010 at the age of 46, also directed Perfect Blue and Paprika.
In hedendaags Tokyo vinden drie thuislozen op kerstavond een baby in een vuilnishoop waardoor hun leven volledig in de war wordt geschopt. De drie zetten alles in het werk om het kind om te achterhalen wat er met de ouders gebeurd is. Op hun zoektocht worden ze regelmatig geconfronteerd met hun verleden, en leren ze naar de toekomst te kijken.
Moderne klassieker van Satoshi Kon, één van de groten van moderne Japanse animatie die in 2010 op 46-jarige leeftijd overleden is, tevens regisseur van onder andere Perfect Blue en Paprika.

Anime is usually seen as something typically Japanese, even as representing the country and its culture. But the Japanese animation industry has a long history of interaction with Asia, North America, and Europe. From the early days of Astro Boy, via the roots of Studio Ghibli, to the latest made-for-Netflix animation, such interaction continues to shape “anime” to this day – including a litte pitstop in Holland along the way.
