Vanuit haar ouderlijk huis in Bethlehem is Palestijnse kunstenaar Emily Jacir getuige van vrijwel dagelijkse verzet van de bevolking. Aan het eind van haar straat werd de controversiële Westoever-barrière gebouwd. Op de heuvel ziet ze de lichten van de alsmaar groeiende Israëlische nederzettingen. Letter to a friend is een persoonlijk kunstproject dat een fascinerend licht werpt op de dagelijkse realiteit van het Israëlisch-Palestijnse conflict. Met behulp van archiefbeelden en kaarten geeft ze een helder overzicht van de geografische gevolgen van de Israëlische muur en nederzettingen voor Palestina. Een urgent portret van een eenvoudig leven dat haar gang gaat, ondanks enorme druk van absurde politieke omstandigheden.
Palestinian artist Emily Jacir witnesses the resistance of her fellow Palestinians almost every day from her parental home in Bethlehem. At the end of her street the Israelis have erected the controversial West Bank separation barrier. On the hill she can see the lights of the constantly growing Israeli settlements. letter to a friend is a personal art project that sheds fascinating light on the everyday reality of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. With the help of archival images and maps, she offers a clear overview of the geographical impact of the Israeli barrier and the settlements on Palestine. An urgent portrait of a simple life that takes its course, despite the enormous pressure of absurd political circumstances.
